PHARMACY/PRESCRIPTION DRUGS
Eligible drug benefits include prescriptions and some over-the-counter drugs that are available through pharmacies for administration in a home setting or other ambulatory setting and require a prescription by a licensed medical practitioner or other provincially licensed prescriber. 



WHAT IS COVERED?
There are diferent categories of drugs that are listed in the national Drug Benefit list as follows:
  • Prescription drugs listed in the national Drug Benefit list

    Limited Use Benefits
    There are 3 types listed as follows;
      1. Required prior approval using the Exception or Limited Use Drugs Request form
      2. Do not require prior approval including items with age gender limitations
                                 Multivitamins for children up to 6 years old
                                 Prenatal and postnatal multivitamins for females
                                 between 12 and 50 years old
      3. Do not require prior approval if used whithin the allowed quantity and frequency limitations.
  • Over ther counter (OTC's) drugs that are listed in the national Drug Benefit list
  •  Extemporaneous compounds

               Defination
               A mixture(s) that require(s) compounding in a apharmacy in accordance with
               the order prescribed by a licensed Medical Doctor and which must not
               duplicate the formulation of commercially manufactured drug products.

 
WHAT IS NOT COVERED?
  • Anorexents such as diet pills
  • Herbal and homeopathic remedies such as primrose oil
  • Megavitamins
  • Drugs with investigational/experimental status
  • Vaccinations for travel indications
  • Fertility agents and impotence drugs
  • Drugs that are de-listed


WHO CAN PRESCRIBE AND PROVIDE BENEFITS?
A licensed Medical Practitioner registered to practice in the Province they are located in, may dispense their expertise in a specific benefit area as follows:
  • Medical Doctor
  • Medical Specialist
  • Licensed Pharmacist
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Any medical personnel specializing in a specific area of expertise


HOW CAN YOU ACCESS THE BENEFITS?
  • Make an apointment with your/a doctor at a Medical Clinic
  • Take your prescription, take it to the nearest Pharmacy

 
WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES?
  • Inform the Doctor/Pharmacist that you are a member of Bigstone Cree Nation
  • Inform the Doctor/Pharmacist if you are covered under another health care insurance plan.
  • Pick up your prescription when it is ready
  • Attend any scheduled appointments with specialists if one has been made for you.
