HISTORY

The plans and construction of the Elders Lodge began in 1998 and officially opened in January 1999; is situated on Bigstone Cree Nation reserve No. 166 A and close to all amenities. A vision made possible by the Bigstone Health Commission and Bigstone Band to provide a facility easily accessible and the service is provided to all elders and others residing in Wabasca/Desmarais, Sandy Lake, Calling Lake, Chipewyan Lakes, and Peerless and Trout Lake, Alberta.

VISION

We provide safe and secure home-like independent living quarters to Bigstone elders and others where they experience a home away from home atmosphere.

MISSION STATEMENT

We provide safe and comfortable accommodation, while encouraging a sense of respect, dignity, and self worth for elders, who are able to remain independent with assistance from community based services.

SERVICES PROVIDED

We provide complete furnished rooms for elders and others for their comfort.

We provide three hot, home-style meals prepared fresh daily and including nutritious snack’s available between meals. We do some catering when requested by Health Commission staff.
We work with Health Dietician who recently came on board with Health Commission, and with the community.
We provide twenty four hour supervision, security, medical service assistance, and other activities.

We provide laundry service for a small fee for those that request laundry service.

We provide weekly cleaning services to each room which is once a week.

We have two lounge areas with full cable hookup, a respite day room for emergencies, and a house phone provided for local calling.

There is weekly communion by Catholic Church for those who want to attend, and other faith and no one will be forced as such.

Medical Assistance:

• Certified nursing staff including, a Licensed Practical Nurse, Health Care Aides, and Personal Care Attendants.

• Basic vital signs monitoring including simple dressings and foot care by certified personnel as ordered by your physician. Any other medical treatment that might be required is within the health care providers licensing standards. .

• Referrals to other agencies, and follow up to ensure continuance of health procedures.

• Medical referral van is available by Bigstone Referral Unit for doctor appointments.

• Administering of medication to those that require assistance or monitoring of medication regime.

• In the event of a medical emergency the Lodge Staff will call an ambulance for further treatment and assessment. Family members will be notified or designate will be notified regarding client status.

• Monthly reviews of health status with the Health Committee.

UNITS AVAILABLE

• 12 fully modern and spacious rooms with full bath and shower on the lodge side.

• 8 small rooms for individuals on the Group Home side with Common bath/shower available.

• All rooms have outlets for cable or phone hookup for individual use.

REQUIREMENTS BEFORE ADMISSION:

• Each applicant is required to complete an application for accommodation, along with a current medical assessment completed by your physician and income assessment/statement to show the provisions.
• Although we provide assisted care services all new applicants should be relatively independent with daily care, and should require minimal assistance.

• Review of your application for accommodation by the Health Committee, granting approval to provide accommodation and services based on certain admission criteria. You will be notified in writing of your application status.

The Elder's lodge and Group Home provides a home like atmosphere for the elders within the community. It is a place where they can experience carefree living in a safe and secure environment. The Lodge also provides a comfortable accommodation while encouraging a sense of respect, dignity and self worth for those who are able to remain independent with assistance from the community based services.
